Sherwani

Sherwani

The Sherwani is the traditional men's garb of Hyderabad. It is a coat-like tunic with a tight-fitting collar (fastened with hooks), close-fitting in the upper torso and flaring somewhat in its lower half. It usually has six or seven buttons, often removable ones made from gold sovereigns for special occasions. The material is usually silk or wool. A groom may use gold brocade for his wedding sherwani, but otherwise good taste dictates understated colors, albeit with rich and textured fabrics. The sherwani is usually worn over a silk or cotton kurta (long shirt) and pyjamas (baggy pants with a drawstring at the waist).

Men's Suits Are Back in Fashion

The standard man's suit is perhaps the most enduring and acceptable item of fashion ever devised. The suit seems to be enjoying a revival and has become noticeably more fashionable in recent years. With suits in fashion, are we regressing to a former stage of style?

There are plenty who would claim that the popularity and stylish acceptability of suits has never been in doubt. It isn't so much a case of men's suits being back in fashion, more a case of them having never gone away in the first place.

Most men have a suit. Some have several as there are many occasions that demand a suit. The obvious ones are when you are going for a job interview, or when attending a wedding. Funerals are also a time when suits are commonly worn as a mark of respect for the deceased. These are all formal occasions, but suits can be worn simply for those times when feeling good and looking smart is all you want.

With suits in fashion again you may be put off at the thought that getting one will be an expensive move. This need not be so. It's true that a hand made suit tailored by the world's best will set you back more than you'd like to know, but that's the top end of the scale. At the middle and lower ends of the scale there are suits to suit all tastes and all pockets.

If we divide suits into three ranges of, budget, middle range and top of the range, then you can probably expect to pay roughly the following for a man's suit. In the budget range a simple suit without frills will cost you as little as £15. Yes, that is the price that Tesco has plumped for on what must be the cheapest new suit ever. Don't expect too much at that price, but then again, it is cheaper than hiring one for a weekend.

In the middle priced range of suits you should expect to start at around £250. At this price you will get a perfectly serviceable suit for all occasions. The middle range runs from this starting price to around £750, at which price you are starting to get into the serious side of suits in fashion.

A top of the range suit will set you back anything from £750 to around - well, the sky's the limit. If you have the money to spend and you want to, you could spend six figures, maybe even seven figures on a suit.

Would it be worth it? That depends. If you are a top performer who wants to look great on stage, then it probably will be worth it. If you are just some ordinary guy who likes suits, it may be harder to justify it. However, even at the lower end of the top range at around £1,000, that will buy one heck of a suit and make an equally strong statement. With suits in fashion again, it's really your choice.

FASHION/ Sunday Random Snaps

I know a lot of bright colours can sometimes be a little bit
overwhelming, but I do love an odd touch of neon colour in
an outfit. I adore bright pink neon nails worn with a simple
black dress and shoes, for some reason that brightness just
makes me smile. This weeks Sunday random snaps is
dedicated to images that I think display a nice and stylish
use of bright colour.

Traditional Clothing of Pakistan:

Salwar kameez (shalwar qameez) is the national dress of Pakistan. Salwars are loose trousers designed in various styles. Originally, the salwars were flared towards the bottom with embellishments or fancy cutwork. Today, there are many variations of the same. At times, the bottom of the salwar is narrow and fitting. The salwar kameez is important especially during the festivals celebrated in Pakistan, for men as well as women. Salwar kameez is also popular due to the comfort factor. The salwar is tied at the waist with the help of a drawstring and more recently; elastic is also used for the same purpose. The fit is generally baggy or tapering. Narrow tight fitting salwars are known as churidars. These have become a rage in the recent years even in India.

The kameez is large and loose fitting tunic worn with the baggy salwar. Men as well as women wear the same attire, with a difference in the colors used, fits, silhouettes and the kind of embellishments used. Interesting patterns woven with lace are used to add femininity to the kameez. Women also use a dupatta with the salwar kameez. Dupattas are long yards of cloth available along with the salwar kameez because their color and pattern is coordinated as per the entire ensemble. Women also wear scarves or shawls with the salwar kameez that is used to wrap around the head and neck area. A variety of synthetic or cotton fabrics are used in the creation of the salwar kameez.

Although the sherwani originated in India during the 18th century, it is also the national dress for men in Pakistan. Off late, sherwanis designed for women are gaining popularity. A sherwani is a long coat worn with a salwar. Sherwanis are generally made from heavy fabrics.

The achkan is yet another important dress of Pakistan. An achkan is a long jacket, which also originated in the 19th century in India. These are long sleeved coats reaching all the way to the knees. At times, achkan can even go lower.

Apart from the traditional clothing worn by Pakistanis, on similar lines with India, one can see other forms of western attire as well. But the traditional clothing definitely has a strong foothold in the modern society even today.
